The Cost of Living in the Riviera Maya

It’s taken us over a year to compose this blog post. We wanted to make sure we had a year’s worth of data and documentation in order to provide the most accurate information on the real cost of living in the Riviera Maya.

What do I do all day?

When people find out that I live in the Western Caribbean most of the year as a retired expat, one of the first things they ask me is "what do you do all day?”  My answer is always "NOTHING.”  After-all, I'm retired, so relaxation and enjoyment is my priority.

The Honeymooners on 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen, Mexico

No. My husband and I are not honeymooners.  In fact, we have not been honeymooners for over 15 years; although we have taken our share of honeymoons.
But the word "honeymooners" is what we are often referred to as we hold hands walking up and down the famous 5th avenue in Playa del Carmen.

NO CAR, NO PROBLEM

Many of our family and friends ask us how we manage living in the Western Caribbean without a car. Our answer is always “NO CAR, NO PROBLEM”.

The Best Weekend Brunch in Town...PLANK!

Standing outside Plank
Our new favorite restaurant is Plank.  Don’t get us wrong, we still love Imprevist (Plank’s sister restaurant), but Plank has the “best weekend brunch in town”.  They are only open for brunch on Saturday and Sunday, and believe me, we attend both days.

Why we love Liverpool!

Liverpool is one of our favorite stores here in the Riviera Maya. When looking for quality household items, accessories and furniture, Liverpool is the place to go, hands down. We recently purchased a mirror from Liverpool and scheduled delivery to our home in Puerto Aventuras.  When the mirror was delivered, the deliverymen unwrapped the mirror to make sure it was the correct mirror and that there was not damage during the delivery process. During the unwrapping, one of the men was using a box cutter to remove the paper and plastic that the mirror was wrapped in. While he was cutting the wrapping, he accidentally cut the frame of the mirror, which caused damage.

Cirque du Soleil in Riviera Maya

We love the theater.  So naturally, when we heard that Cirque du Soleil was building their own theater in the Riviera Maya, we were ecstatic!  We have seen their performances before in Las Vegas, Nevada and knew we would not be disappointed.
