Cirque du Soleil in Riviera Maya

We love the theater.  So naturally, when we heard that Cirque du Soleil was building their own theater in the Riviera Maya, we were ecstatic!  We have seen their performances before in Las Vegas, Nevada and knew we would not be disappointed.

We purchased our tickets for New Year’s Eve and opted for the VIP package, which included dinner at one of the stage tables, the show, and unlimited champagne.  Since neither one of us drink alcohol, we elected to take the bottle of champagne and give it to one of our new friends in Puerta Aventuras (PA).

Upon arriving at the Cirque du Soleil Theater at the Vidanta Riveria Maya Resort, we could see three vast buildings.  The first building housed the Nektar Yucatezan Grille and Lounge and outdoor patio.  The second building accommodated the Cirque du Soleil gift shop which sold everything including dresses, masks and magnets.  The third and most magnificent building is the large theater.

As we lined up to enter the theater, Cirque du Soleil entertainers escorted VIP guests to our own special  lounge.  This section is a waiting area where you sip champagne or other beverages and wait to be seated at your VIP table.

Once seated, our server quickly introduced himself and began to explain the evening’s events.  As we dined on appetizers, we marveled at the beauty of its presentation. Our appetizers were served on a raised platter, fit for a King and Queen (see menu below); and a live band entertained us with the wonderful sounds of Mexican music and dance. Dinner was wonderful and had a varied menu, including a vegetarian dish (you will need to ask for it).  See pictures below of the great presentation of the vegetarian meal and half-rib meal; both were extremely tasty.  The dessert was a very creative sampler of very delicious treats!  The whole presentation of the meal was second to none.

Once dinner was complete, the main show began.  It was an extravaganza for the eyes and ears.  In the typical Cirque du Soleil fashion, there were trapeze artists, acrobats, shooting balls of fire, trampoline artists, banging drums, crowd interaction and much, much, more!

All in all, like all Cirque du Soleil shows, you will remember it for a lifetime!

Some helpful hints:

  • Take a sweater or light jacket; it is a bit cool in the theater.
  • The show last 1 hour and 15 minutes.  If you purchased dinner with the show, keep in mind that the dinner starts about an hour before the show, so make sure you arrive early so you are done with dinner before the show starts.  You don’t want to feel rushed.
  • They will also take a professional photo of you when you get there with a Cirque entertainer.  As you are leaving at the end of the show, they will have the photos ready to purchase for $350 pesos.
  • We took the Tulum to Playa del Carmen colectivo ($25 pesos each) and then the Playa del Carmen to Cancun colectivo ($22 pesos each) and just told the driver to stop at the Vidanta Resort.
  • After the show, since it was dark and we did not want to stand on the dark highway waiting for a colectivo, we took a taxi back to PA for $600 pesos.  The theater has taxis waiting for you if needed.
