CHANGE IS THE ONLY CONSTANT. In April and May of 2022, I wrote about changes and updates in the Multiple Migratory Format (FMM) form procedure and the 180-day limit for tourists in Mexico. Now, the latest and greatest is that the National Migration Institute (INM) office wants to move toward a paperless system due to the continued requests by the Mexican Caribbean Tourism business to reduce INM wait times at the airport and better track visitors to Mexico.
According to Sergio González Rubiera, president of the Mexican Association of Travel Agencies (AMAV) in Quintana Roo, the program will reduce wait times from hours to minutes.
“Now, instead of the FMM, they (INM) are just going to stamp them,” he said adding that “normal tourists who come on vacation will not have to fill out the FMM, neither printed nor electronic, and everyone will be granted a permit to stay for 180 days.”
Of course, with these new systems comes several questions:
1. What happens when visitors to Mexico go through immigration at the airport?
2. If I enter Mexico as a visitor with my FMM form, but the process changes while I’m on vacation, what happens when it’s time for me to leave Mexico?
3. What will the procedure be for citizens of Mexico?
4. Do permanent residents need to go to the INM office at the airport prior to departure?
5. When will this new procedure be at all the airports in Mexico?
These are just a few questions that will need to be addressed as the new system is rolled out, but the links below provide a good start of how the process is working currently and may provide some insight into how this new digital procedure will enhance the overall process and make it better for all of us.
