We have explored numerous Internet access options during our time living in the Riviera Maya. Sometimes it seems like an unending quest. Depending on which neighborhood you live in, you likely have access to either Telmex or Izzi (formerly Cablemas) for Internet service via phone/cable TV lines.
We have you used both and have not always been completely satisfied with the reliability and speed (at least in our neighborhood). Both offer various packages in a range of speeds and prices for Internet, TV, and telephone. Packages may also include video services such as Netflix or ClaroVideo.
A new option that has appeared in the last couple years is Internet access via cell network providers. These services have cell data modems that provide a WiFi signal, similar to the traditional Internet providers. AT&T was the first to offer Internet en Casa, but now Telcel has entered the game with Internet en tu casa. Competition is a good thing! However, since the cell data networks are used, the speed is somewhat limited; both offer 10Mbps, but we have seen actual speed from 5 – 40 Mbps. Also, there are monthly download limits and when you exceed those limits, your speed is sharply reduced (so that video will likely not work then). Luckily, both providers have a range of plans with download limits that are quite high and offer the option to buy additional bandwidth (when needed) for a reasonable price.
We have tried all the Internet providers for at least short periods (a few months) to determine which one is best for us. We suggest you do the same as every location has its own pluses and minuses with regards to internet access.
Happy web surfing!!!
