WHAT NOT TO DO IN PUBLIC

My husband and I recently had the opportunity to dine at one of the local restaurants on 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.  After chatting with our hostess, reviewing the menu and placing our orders, we started doing one of our favorite things; people watching.

We enjoy watching all the people going in and out of shops, stopping to speak with vendors about their wares, and looking at everyone’s footwear.  I know it may seem strange, but we are always fascinated by the many different types of tennis shoes (sneakers or gym shoes, depending on where you are from) we see; multi-colored, solids, stripes, crazy colored shoelaces, etc.

But this post is not about the restaurant we were at or all the fun tennis shoes we observed.  This post is about something we saw that made us stop, pause and take notice.

It’s incredible that people will go to a different country and engage in behaviors that they would never engage in in their own home town or community. But then again, maybe they would.

We certainly recognize that every country and culture is different. And what’s acceptable to one person may be totally unacceptable to another person.  But I don’t know…maybe it’s just me, but using some basic common sense is just a given.

Respect the fact that indeed, you are in another country and should treat your time there with appreciation and regard…after all, you are in someone else’s home.

But I digress.  Let me get back to the offending behavior.  Right on 5th Avenue, in the middle of the day, at a table where all could see, was a man with his shoes off and feet up on the table, while his partner picked toe jam out from between his toes.

Seeing this remaindered me of the etiquette videos that Jeanne Moos, CNN TV Anchor often airs, showing people engaging in rude, offensive behavior.

With today’s technology at everyone’s fingertips, you are being watched and often recorded.  So please, the next time you even think about scratching your butt in public, flossing your teeth on the bus, or having your partner give you a pedicure on the top of a restaurant table, remember, someone is taking your photo and posting to a blog, just like this.
