Mr. Tofu - Eating Plant-Based

When you eat plant-based, and live in another country, sometimes it can be challenging to find substitute products.  For example, during the holidays, my family and I really enjoy a soy-based turkey substitute, called Tofurky.   Several supermarkets in the United States offer this meat alternative, and therefore, it is readily available.

Now for my carnivorous eating friends, I can see you all now, rolling your eyes, shaking your heads and wringing your hands, saying “a tofu turkey?”

But I digress…as the holiday was approaching, we started asking around Quintana Roo, if anyone knew where we might be able to find Tofurky.  After we sent our inquiry, we sat back and waited to be bombarded with all sorts of negative comments.  Well, to our surprise, not only were we not bombarded with negativity, but someone had the name of a company in Mexico, that specializes in all things plant-based, called Mr. Tofu.  Imagine our surprise to hear such wonderful news!!!

We could not wait to view their website and look at all the goodies that we haven’t been able to find locally. We were like children in
Toys R Us; we just couldn’t believe it. Everything we normally buy in the United States was right here in Mexico, and all we had to do was ask.  We looked at each and every category on their website, just drooling and dreaming.  After about 30 or more minutes, it was time to get serious…it was time to order!

Since they are located far away, they have great delivery option packages.  We placed our order, which included a brand of tofu turkey by Gardein, paid with our PayPal account, and then waited for our DHL delivery.  Within 2 days, our order was in Puerto Aventuras, with everything still ice-cold.

Needless to say, we were very impressed with Mr. Tofu, completely enjoyed our soy-based turkey, and had planned on using them again.

BUT…there was another expat that ordered around the time we did.  Unfortunately, they had a very negative experience, which is documented here on Playa.info.  Like any review, you will need to do your own research and make your own decisions.

After reading about their experience, we may or may not order again.  We were a little surprised about how smooth the order process was when we ordered; after all, this is Mexico. And to be perfectly honest, things here are just not that simple (at least most of the time).

For those of you that are super curious about what the heck plant-based eating is all about, here’s a couple of resources.
