In researching other dentists in the area on Playa.info forum, we learned about Dr. Jorge Armenta of Playa Dentist. After reading his reviews, we decided to give him a try.
We sent him an email requesting an appointment and received confirmation. On the day of our appointment, we arrived and were greeted by his receptionist. Although she did not speak English, she was warm and engaging. After she confirmed who we were and completed her paperwork, it was time for our appointments.
Dr. Armenta’s office looks like a typical dentist’s office. If I did not know I was in Mexico, I would think that I was at a dental office in the United States. Dr. Armenta was extremely thorough and does all the work himself, with each checkup/cleaning taking about 40 minutes. There was an assistant (not a dental hygienist), but her role was very limited during the process.
After our appointments, Dr. Armenta recommended that I have a panoramic x-ray at Sadentis 3D. During my checkup, he saw some areas that needed further examination. He provided a prescription and sent me right down the street to have my panoramic x-ray (his office does x-rays, but not this type). That process took about 15 minutes, then it was back to Dr. Armenta’s office for the consultation. I will need to follow up for more intensive work on a couple of teeth, but this was no surprise. I had been informed about the additional work in the past, so it was just a matter of time before I would need to decide about the recommended work, and who would provide that service.
We were very impressed with Dr. Armenta. He is very professional, friendly, outgoing, and speaks perfect English. He spent lots of time explaining his recommendations and associated cost. In fact, I already have my follow-up appointment scheduled with his office.
But the main variable that we were most impressed with was the cost:
Two cleanings and checkups - $1,200 pesos or $60 USD.
One panoramic x-ray - $300 pesos or $15 USD.
So, for a total of $1,500 pesos or $75 USD, we both had our teeth cleaned, examined, and I had a full-mouth x-ray. You just can’t beat that price!
Whether you are on vacation or live here, we highly recommend his services.
Additional information regarding Playa Dentist:
1)There is a big price difference between his prices and the price of dental services in Puerto Aventuras. See previous blog post for dental services in Puerto Aventuras.
2)Root canals are performed on Saturday by another dental colleague that comes to Dr. Armenta’s office. Her name is Dra. America Portillo (btw...she is wonderful).
3)Based on so many referrals, Dr. Armenta is extremely busy, so you may have to contact him a couple of times before he responds (we sent two emails before we received our appointments). UPDATE: I confirmed with him during one of my follow-up appointments, which way he prefers to be contacted. He likes What'sApp and would like more of his patients to use this tool.
It's the only way I contact him now to make, confirm and/or reschedule appointments.
4)He takes cash (pesos or USD), checks, credit cards. There is a small processing fee for using a credit card.
5)Good location and easy to get to by colectivo.
6)Take a sweater or jacket. The office can be cool at times.
7)We submitted our receipts to our insurance company and were promptly reimbursed.
